Where A-level Maths marks actually go
A-level Maths is not so much harder than GCSE as far less forgiving. One slip in the algebra runs through a whole question. The grade comes down to accuracy under time and reading what a question is really asking for. Marks cluster in a few places every year.
- Pure. Algebraic manipulation, calculus, trigonometric identities, and proof or "show that" questions where the whole mark is in the working.
- Mechanics. Forces and kinematics, and the diagrams students skip and then cannot reason from.
- Statistics. Hypothesis testing, probability distributions, and the prescribed large data set that rewards students who have actually worked with it.
How the papers are structured
A-level Maths is three papers with every major board: AQA, OCR, Edexcel and Eduqas. All of it is sat with a calculator, all of it is terminal, and there is no coursework. Boards divide the applied content differently, some setting mechanics and statistics in fixed papers and others mixing them, so we work to your child's exact board rather than a generic scheme. The large data set is set in advance and differs by board; a student who has explored it moves faster on those statistics questions. The qualification is linear, so everything is examined at the end of Year 13: a topic left shaky in the first year does not go away, it comes back in the final papers. The formula booklet is thinner than students expect too, and forgetting a standard result it does not contain can cost a whole question.
Where good students still lose grades
Plenty of students understand the maths and still miss the grade. The marks go on accuracy and exam habits, and both are coachable.
- Accuracy. A correct method with one arithmetic slip loses the final marks. We build the habits that catch it before the end of the question.
- "Show that". The answer is printed, so every mark is in complete, clear working, not the result.
- Method choice. Spotting whether a question wants the product rule, a substitution or a sketch is the skill the paper is really testing.
- Time. The last, highest mark questions get rushed when the earlier ones ran long.
The jump from GCSE is real
At GCSE a strong student can lean on recall and tidy numbers. A-level assumes the algebra is automatic and asks for reasoning that runs across several topics at once. Most students who wobble in Year 12 are not weak on the content; they are slow and error-prone on the manipulation underneath it, and small mistakes compound. Fixing that fluency is the highest-leverage thing we do, and it is far easier in October than in April. Students who start on the front foot spend Year 13 extending their grade, not rescuing it.
What we actually do
Every student starts with a diagnosis: current grade, target grade, exam board, and the specific topics leaking marks. From there the work is deliberate.
- Daily one-to-one tutoring, up to 5 hours a week, on the topics that actually move the grade.
- Predicted papers and exam questions written to sit at the difficulty of this year's real paper.
- Marked mock exams with examiner-style feedback, so the first full paper your child sits is not in the exam hall.
